Cheers, boos follow renewable energy bill

The Daily Reporter -- A manufacturer and union predict more construction work from a state renewable energy bill, while business groups argue the measure would drive jobs out of Wisconsin.

The bill would support energy-conservation projects by increasing the amount the state charges ratepayers. It also would set a 2025 deadline for 25 percent of state electricity to come from renewable sources, such as wind or solar.

Supporters of the bill, such as solar panel manufacturer Helios USA LLC and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Wisconsin local unions, are rallying for the bill.

The proposed changes, especially the conservation mandate, mean jobs for electricians, construction laborers and pipe fitters, said Dave Boetcher, government affairs coordinator for the local unions.

JOHNNY95206 from Stockton...

Hey Dude...even the mighty Mississippi started as small raindrops in Minnesota!

Using the 'glass is half full' theory, more of us should try it around here, that is 50 more families WITH a job. Fifty more families spending money in your town, 50 families helping the economy. Small raindrops and baby steps....something to applaud not denigrate!

CobraLeader: Please contain yourself and watch your laguage. That nonsense it totally unnecessary here.

WI's renewable energy bill is very similar to others passed much earlier by most states. The legislators and people of Wisconsin should have no problem with this. Come on Madison, what is taking so long to get this moving?

"Renewable-energy goals proposed in Wisconsin and enacted in surrounding states are helping Helios USA build its first solar panel manufacturing plant in Wisconsin, said CEO Steve Ostrenga. He would not say where the plant would be built, but said it would have about 40,000 square feet and create at least 50 jobs within three years of opening."

50 jobs in 3 Year WoW.

What the % Is that to the people out of work that need job?

Make a lot of ยข yes?

All you need to do is to look around at the rest of the world. China is quickly becoming the economic power of the 21st. century. Despite massive coal reserves, they are also investing huge amounts of money in wind, solar and nuclear energy. They are quickly taking leadership positions in wind and solar power. Germany is also investing heavily in alternative energy, especially wind power. Shouldn't all of this tell all you with your "head stuck in the ground "drill baby drill" mentality" that the USA better get off its butt and prepare for the future! Industry has the history of resisting change, especially change that will cause short-term profit declines as everyone is living in the present and wants immediate gratification, profits and bonuses no matter what the consequences for the future. Is this going to be expensive? Yes? Will there be employment issues as the USA transitions from a manufacturing based economy to one based upon technology and services? Yes. Still, we need to start now! Otherwise, we will find ourselves in the same position as Great Britain at the end of the 19th century as it clung to a coal based manufacturing economy and did not invest in the future. Instead, the British relied upon their military power in hopes they could maintain their dominant position as a world leader. We should not let this happen to the USA!

A new renewable energy bill? What happened to the last one that President Obama tried to shove down the American people's throat?

Renewable energy sources are good...no two ways about that! But we should have moved to renewable energy a decade ago.Hydro-power from dams has been under-exploited too. Anything renewable = better than non-renewable.

Most excellent Ted, $700 million for 50 solar panel jobs. I'd love to have one of those jobs that pay $14 million per year!

I'm all for using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. But if you have to raise utility bills to pay for these kind of projects which will only provide short term construction jobs. The fact is when they are completed and operational they only need a few people to operate them for the next 20 to 30 years. Also there is no incentive to the people who pay these utility bills, because when was the last time you saw a utility bill go down? In the meantime, you driven out manufacturing companies because they can no longer afford higher utility bills and they employ more people all year long for many years. I think the state needs to rethink their logic, before they lose manufacturing companies and add more people to their unemployment roles.

There is only gonna be 25% of state renewable energy. As usual they plan to have the ratepayers pay for it.

Twenty-five percent from renewable energy by 2025???That's just too little..too late! Should have thought of this 8 or 10 years ago and gotten more from wind and solar by now....

Have they considered the cost of going solar? Not everyone has that kind of money. I makes no difference if you go broke attempting to buy solar power or if you go broke paying penalties.

Companies and people are more likely to conserve with a carrot (incentives) than the stick ( rate hikes)

We can't keep using fossil fuels forever! Someday we WILL run out. And sure, we may have enough coal to last hundreds of years, but not oil! Wake up!

Renewable energy is a way to improve energy resources and put more people at work while curbing other industries from having monopolistic control of resources. Wake up people.

Because the government is sponsoring it, it is bad. They are currently capable of doing virtually nothing for the good of the people.

Yet another case of the government telling you how to live. If renewable energy were competitive without subsidies there would be a massive conversion on its own without the need to steal from the taxpayers.
