I drove a diesel and I'm sold.
The infrastructure is here, the technology is ready, fuel consumption can dramatically start to decrease when the EPA allows them. Time to get the politicians out of the way.

there will always be trade offs. Heck, already Newton said "actio, re-actio." Where there's action there's reaction.
Seems re-action it's pretty strong on here.

Anything of this nature will ALWAYS have its pros and cons.
You know what Mark Twain said:
If the opposite of PRO is CON then that must mean the opposite of PROgress is CONgress!

As long as there burning coal to make electric these guys shouldn't be allowed to claim how green an electric car is when electric isn't all green.

Two days in a row! This article must be pretty popular, even if they misspelled "diesel".

14of45, I've gotta think you're remembering the old, smelly, Diesel of several years ago. The new ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) doesn't smell much at all. Certainly not like the old stuff. I'll admit I don't want to stick my head up the tailpipe of my Diesel truck, but I don't really want to suck on the exhaust from my Sonata either. (Disclaimer - I haven't driven my Diesel in Canada, so I don't know if you have the same flavor of ULSD as we do in the States. Feel free to educate me on that.)

AKmailman asks, "why are these clean burning diesel cars that are all over europe not made for the USA" That would be because our EPA and safety regulations won't allow them in this country without major modifications that would add to the cost and subtract from the efficiency, and that makes it unfeasible for the manufacturers to try to produce those models for this market. We're just starting to see some of the newer Diesel models entering the US market and they may be able to compete here, but they don't have the same kind of fuel economy numbers that their European cousins do. It's a shame, really. Diesel could be a real hit here if they would remove, or at least reduce, the onerous highway motor fuel tax. Diesel would instantly become cheaper than regular gas and everybody would want one. (I'll take two - one in a nice little car and one in a really big truck. Thanks.)

As a non-believer in EV's, I'm glad to see some compares. Clean diesel & NGV's are excellent alternatives to the super hyped EV.

I am so happy the "experts" are beginning to consider diesel as a viable fuel in the green society.

The question is moving to alternative energy. If bio-diesel fits into that class then ok. We have to have a better way to generate the electricity. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

They must make sure that their tests were done correctly. Now they need to have another lab follow there tests to see if all is right.

The electric car does not offer any significant improvement unless solar power is used to recharge the batteries. An electric car recharged from coal is not clean.

I still find it interesting with all the talk about how "Clean" the electric car is, I still have not heard how we are going to generate "Clean" electricity to run it.

too bad that too many ppl still think of dirt spewing diesel school busses when thinking of diesel.
Most newer diesel cars / trucks are much cleaner than let's say many 1985 or thereabouts clunkers who spew oil, unburned gasoline and all sorts of noxious gases into the atmosphere.
In addition, diesel engines are MUCH better for towing and are much more fuel efficient for that task... that means, much less fossil fuel for the same amount of towing capacity and still much higher fuel mileage. less oil also means less pollution.
